Why I Stopped Doing The Keto Diet


I’m sure by now everyone knows about the keto diet. It’s the amazing diet that allows you to eat bacon and cream cheese and lose weight without exercise. As gimmicky as it sounds, I did lose some weight while I was on it. You might be asking yourself why I would quit this diet and trade it in for working out 5 days a week and watching what I eat. I was extremely happy with the weight loss but for me, this diet had its consequences.

  1. The food

I love avocados and bacon, so this was a dream diet for me. But was it too good to be true? I would eat salads topped with some bacon and avocado for lunch and dinner. They tasted amazing but I always felt a little sick. I chalked it up to the Keto flu so I kept trying to push forward. By the time I finally decided to quit keto, I had lost a significant amount of weight but I felt disgusting. I always felt a little nauseous and I had the worst migraines. Lots of people enjoy the foods on Keto but it definitely wasn’t for me.

2. Exhausted

I’ve never been more exhausted in my life! I followed keto very strictly, kept a detailed record of my diet and watched my macros. The weight fell off quickly but I was too tired to really enjoy it. There were tons of articles on Pinterest about this and I tried the remedies that were supposed to help but it never worked for me. The people I knew in the instagram keto community were amazing and they gave me lots of suggestions but my body just couldn’t adjust.

3. Am I in ketosis?

This was on my mind all the time! Am I doing this right? I feel horrible so maybe I’m doing this wrong? Just like everyone else, I used ketosis strips. After tracking for a while, I started noticing that they weren’t reliable. Then I read that people were using meters and testing their blood. That’s where I stopped. I’m not going to stick myself everyday to test my blood.

4. Cheat days

After 2 months on the keto diet, I needed a cheat meal. I was in the middle of summer and watermelons were everywhere! I finally allowed myself to eat watermelon. A lot of watermelon. The next day, I gained 3lbs. From that day, I promised I wouldn’t cheat again but it did get me thinking. What if I decided to splurge and eat a piece of cake or sushi? Would I gain tons of weight from one meal like the watermelon did? It took me a week to lose the watermelon weight so I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose the weight after a legit cheat meal. I know keto is more a lifestyle change than a diet but could I commit to no cake and sushi for the rest of my life? The answer is NO!

5. Lifestyle change

After 6 months, I had lost 17lbs but I felt miserable. I felt sick, exhausted, and beyond annoyed. How can I live without fruit? Or sushi? How can I live my entire life worried about food? Besides feeling horrible, I was becoming completely obsessed and not in a healthy way. I was always so worried about going over my carb limit, I was worried about not eating enough healthy fats, I was worried about my weight, I was weighing myself constantly… It was a nightmare.

Keto is definitely not for everyone. My body definitely wasn’t made for this diet but I did learn a lot from it. After 6 months on the keto diet, I gained back 8lbs in the first week but the weight finally started coming off again. Now I workout 4-5 days a week, eat balanced meals, I try to add more fruits and vegetables into my diet, and drink tons of water. Lots of people really love the keto diet and some (like me) aren’t made for it. Living a healthy life, maintaining a healthy weight, and making good choices are the key so do what works for you!   1. Thanks for being so transparent! A lot of people rave about the keto diet (I’ve tried it for a month until I realized that I didn’t want to live life without certain veggies, fruits, and definitely not carbs).
    I’m not knocking the keto diet (to each their own) but I firmly believe that weight can be lost with healthy eating, water, and exercise you enjoy. I’m glad you found what works best for you! ❤️


    1. I’m glad you enjoyed my new post! Lots of my friends are on the Keto diet and rave as well but I definitely thought it was important to share the negative side to this new diet. Living without fruits and carbs was rough for me too!😩 😩

    I’m so glad you shared this! I had a very similar experience on Keto. I have put back on all the weight I lost, too! I am now trying to just eat balanced and get healthy! I also missed sushi loads!!!


  3. I also dropped some weight initially working with a holistic nutritionist who has me on a keto eating plan. I dropped 18lbs but I too noticed that if I slipped even a little I would put on 5 lbs overnight and it would take a whole week to come off. I began working out and eating balanced and lost more weight and have kept it off for now 3 years. I am just so tired of always counting macros though so I have started to do intermittent fasting… Life changer! I do a 16 hour fast and 8 hour eating window so now I eat between 11:30 – 7:30 and adjust on the weekends to start later. I only eat when I am hungry and eat healthy but do not worry if I want a treat. And you know what … I haven’t gained a pound. It has been such a relief to just eat only when I am hungry, try and eat the best foods and no longer deprive myself. Your body actually goes into ketosis during this 16 hour fasting window so perhaps that is what is keeping my body in check but I couldn’t be happier.


  4. Isn’t there always a magic answer to weight loss? I agree about Keto. I did it for a while, had some of the same reactions as you, and then I noticed I was having a reaction to dairy. Without dairy, it is a very challenging food plan. In some discussions, I found that I was actually needing to eat some carbs because that is what we need when we are burning energy such as what happens with exercise.


  5. As someone who is getting ready to go back on keto (again…sigh) I’m thankful for this post. I’ll definitely keep these things in mind as I try one more time to make it work. It’s possible that my body just isn’t made for that lifestyle, and if that’s the case then I won’t beat myself up for trying a different route. I appreciate your post!


  6. I’ve not tried the keto diet directly. However we do eat a low-carb diet with healthy fats. I’ve been interested in finding out more about the keto diet and your post definitely helped me understand the lifestyle a little better. I think I’ll keep doing what I’m doing as it’s working for us. I will agree with you, you just need to find what works for you!

    As someone with a degree in nutrition, I’m a bit skeptical about Keto. Like, – without enough fiber, things will stall in digestion and make you feel sick. Plus, eating bacon all the time isn’t really good for you. But I know people who’ve gotten great results, so It’s true that to each their own.


    1. That’s very true about digestion! In the first few weeks, I had stomach cramps along with constipation (sorry tmi). I felt gross all the time and I knew bacon and fatty foods weren’t helping. One thing I did learn while on Keto was that weight loss isn’t everything. If I feel miserable, my body is trying to tell me something and I should listen. I’m much happier with my fruits, veggies, and whole grains😊
